A native of south-central North America, its habitat extends from Alberta, Canada to Mexico passing through 11 US states. It grows at an altitude of 300m (1000ft) in Canada and 2900m (9500ft) in Mexico.
Suitable for well-drained soil in a sunny or partially shaded position, it has leaves that are grey-green, slender and reminiscent of the grass trees. This plant only grows to 1m and is usually solitary though occasionally good populations are found if conditions are optimum.
Flowering occurs at about 6 years of age and then every two to three years depending on conditions. The flowers are bell shaped and held on a spike up to 2 metres above the foliage. The number of flowers on a spike can be anything from 20 to 60 as conditions dictate.
