The Common Ice Plant is a native of Africa and Europe that has become naturalised in Australia. Its habitat ranges from the Wimmera across the southern portion of South & West Australia and up the west coast to Exmouth Gulf. It prefers saline soils because it is a saline accumulator & needs salt for reproduction and the suppression of competing Flora. The soil may be sand (dunes), loam or clay and it can tolerate nutritionally poor soil and disturbed sites.
It is a winter-spring rainfall plant ranging from scattered occurrence to extensive swards in favourable habitats. The flowers are white and occur in Spring and early Summer. The leaves are reputed to be edible.
