A native from the south coastal fringe of West Australia where it likes sand, peaty sand in low-lying areas, swampy areas, seepage areas and consolidated sand dunes. It will withstand short periods of inundation and frost.

An evergreen, small tree growing to a height of 6 metres (19ft) with a spread of 3 metres. The stem is erect, with a smooth, brownish-grey bark and a densely textured crown; the leaves are dull green with rolled in margins, occasionally toothed and occurring in whorls around the stem; the flowers are ruby-red and gold cylindrical spikes, 15cm long and profuse appearing from summer until early autumn.

This plant grows readily from seed.
