Joshua Tree
Yucca brevifolia
A native of the south-western deserts of the USA, it is adaptable to most soils, prefers a sunny position, and is drought, heat and frost resistant. This tree was named by the Mormon settlers of Arizona who thought the tree resembled the biblical Joshua welcoming people to the promised land.
A very slow-growing evergreen, it grows to a height of 7 to 10 metres (21 – 32ft) over a period of 50 years. The leaves are spear-shaped while the flowers that appear on a terminal spike are creamy white and bell-shaped.
The Joshua Tree is known to survive a temperature range of minus 9 degrees C to 49 degrees C.
