Scarlet or Waratah Banksia
Banksia coccinea
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)
The Scarlet Banksia is a native of south-western West Australia where it prefers sandy, well-drained soils in an open, sunny position. It is drought and salt air hardy but a smaller plant is to be had in salt conditions. It very much dislikes frosts. Despite being a winter rainfall plant (Mediterranean climate) it is tolerant of some humidity.
An erect shrub growing to 4 metres with a spread of 3 metres, it has distinctive, leathery leaves which are up to 9 cm long, discolourous (dark green on top and much paler beneath) and are toothed along the margins. the leaf surfaces are covered in hairs giving them a velvety quality. The flowers are scarlet and light grey, up to 6 cm long, terminal and much used in the florist industry. The fruits are large cones with follicles that release the seeds only after a fire and can be used ornamentally.
This plant is not easy to propagate or grow and is one for the experts. It is also the most expensive Banksia seed on the market.
